Bamboos can be used in construction. Bamboo has great potential for production of composite materials and components and can be used as  non-structural applications in construction. Bamboo is the ancient material used by us.

Bamboo is simply used for bridges, scaffolding and housing, but it is usually used as a temporary exterior structural material. In many overly populated regions of the tropics it is used as economical house. It has been used in bicycles, windmills, scales etc.

It has been observed that the composite bamboo panel has a great potential due to improved strength, dimensional stability and other properties. The most important feature is a very good strength to weight ratio. It can be used easily by simple tools and machines. Power-weight ratio of bamboo also support use as a high resistance to the forces created by the high-speed wind, earthquake. First of all, Bamboo is a renewable resource raw materials from agro-forestry and if properly treated and industrially processed, components made of bamboo has a reasonable life span of between 30 and 40 years. In spite of the natural durability of bamboo varies according to the types and kinds of treatments, and various uses and applications in the construction of buildings and established bamboo as an environmental friendly, energy-saving and cost-effective building materials.

Vehicles mat produced by hot pressing of woven bamboo strips. A thin piece of bamboo called “fragment” in width 0.6-1.0 mm hand – the tissue on a bed of different sizes and shapes in order to show the simplest model in which herringbone tape was a 450 angle in relation to the edge of the mat. After the mat is immersed in the phenol-formaldehyde resin, a chemical preservatives increase resistance to decay and termites after the drying, and collected 2-5 mats and hot pressed to the desired thickness.

For BMVC mats wood veneers are placed in-between the layers of bamboo mats. The property of BMVC mainly depends on the properties of the inter-leaved wood veneers.

Treatment

It also has the durability of bamboo less natural it requires chemical treatment for longer life. Bamboo has a low natural durability (1-3 years) from attack by fungi and insects. They are very difficult to be treated using natural preservatives in a state of drought since their external and some internal membranes are impermeable to liquids. Bamboo is a treatment that is best in green conditions.

Bamboo as Construction Material:

Through research it has been found that some species of bamboo have ultimate tensile strength same as that of mild steel at yield point and this coupled with other merits boosts the usage of bamboo as construction material.

Bamboo is a versatile material because of, easy workability and availability. Bamboo need chemical treatment because of its low durability..

Bamboo Trusses:

The bamboo has high strength. An experiment with the construction and testing of a 4m span truss made of round bamboo, matching with the strength of timber.

Bamboo Roof frame:

To put the purlins a frame is needed and that is made from bamboos.

Bamboo walling/ceiling:

Bamboos are used because it is light-weighted, economical and less effected by earthquake shocks. Bamboo walls can be constructed in different modes like

·       Split bamboo mats can be fastened to the bamboo posts or mats can be woven, mud can also be applied to both sides of such mats

·       Bamboo strips nailed to bamboo frame or posts for interior walling

·       Cement or lime plastering can be done on the mud covering for better appearance and hygiene.

It has more strength in vertical position.

For construction of partion wall single layer of bamboo is used.

Bamboo Doors and Windows:

Bamboo frames can be used instead of wooden frame. Hinged bamboo can be used as door frame, doors and purlin. Small hinged bamboo can be used as window.

Bamboo Flooring:

Bamboo can be used as a floor covering materials because of the hardness and attractive appearance. And the whole culms as a framework is done using split bamboo flooring, panels, bamboo mats etc. using beaten with whips wire to the frame.

Strength Properties of Bamboo:

Tensile strength of bamboos is140N/mm2-280N/mm2. It also has been found to act as a great distortion of bamboo, but because of the low ratio of stress compared to steel, because it is not straight it is probably not very good.

In addition, it was determined, earthquake zone fails bamboo joints maximum, energy absorption is minimum. Cellulose is the main component is present in the mechanical properties of bamboo and the main source.

Advantages:

Scientific studies have shown that bamboo can satisfy the various structural requirements and also due to its technical performance of bamboo can be used as building material for the various structural components. The major advantages that make bamboo a more suitable material are:

• It is economical and helps achieve cost-effective construction.

• Bamboo is a fast growing species and is a renewable resource that can be grown in most soil types.

• The component designs are simple, there is no need for highly skilled labor.

• Reliance on natural forests for timber will be reduced thus contributing to environmental protection.

• As you grow in many soil types, growing bamboo is suitable for rehabilitation of degraded forests and other waste lands thus converting fertile land to some extent.

• Creation of employment opportunities, especially for rural and bamboo mats must be manually before converting woven bamboo mats, bamboo and bamboo mat veneer composites mat corrugated sheets.

• Therefore, because of all the above aspects will be general welfare of society, particularly the weaker economic section.
