GLASS BRICKS-ultimate sun light solution

Glass bricks are used from many years. At Roman Empire in AD100,first time glass was used for architect purpose.

Designing of building with glass is the simplest and most comfortable ways of utilizing glass is in the form of glass blocks. they can be used as internally and externally wall which allow sun light ,but at certain amount. Glass bricks are not completely transparent, so that privacy can be maintained.

They are used for both commercial and residential purposes and can be used to fill window openings, form dividing walls, external walls, in the creation of shower cubicles, bars, terraces, and desks.

Argon gas is insulated in the hollow center of glass bricks. It will improve thermal insulation properties.

The International Standard is ISO TC 160/SG1. The Standards allow for variation in sizes and production irregularity. Bricks have three classifications; Class1, Class 2 and Class 3 with Class 1 being the highest and best rating with a maximum permissible deviation from designed size and rectangularity of 1 mm. Now a days some colour hollow glass bricks are available. They have two categories- those that are UV stable and can be used in the same locations as standard clear glass blocks. Another method is to inject colored material. Transparent dye or paint in the hollow center of the blocs to form a permanent coating.

These types of glass have better characteristic then coloured glass. The downside of this production method is that the coloured coating may not be UV stable and can fade in bright sunshine over time and may therefore, not be suitable for all locations.

Glass bricks are placed together with the help of binding materials. There are some methods – the simple method of construction is to put the blocks together at plain surface in a Portland cement-based mortar. Steel rods (reinforcement) are placed after some layer of glass bricks as per recommendation of architect or manufacturer.

Really the usage of glass bricks in construction is limited by our imagination.
